10 reasons why you should build a relationship with a recruitment agency

Careers Avenue blog on why you should build a relationship wit a recruitment agency. The majority of jobs advertised are through recruitment agencies so learn how to benefit by building a relationship.

80% of jobs advertised on the internet are posted by recruitment agencies so here are 10 reasons why you should build a relationship with a recruitment agency. I have worked in various recruitment agencies for 20 years and have built relationships with fantastic candidates looking to progress their careers that I have placed on numerous occasions as well as some candidates turning into clients and friends.

There are pro’s and con’s for using a recruitment agency and here are my 10 reasons why you should build a relationship with them:

1. Free

It’s free to register with recruitment agencies, so you have nothing to lose and if they find you a job it’s a bonus. Some job sites will charge you for having a featured profile on their sites so to keep costs down register with recruitment agencies. Everyone likes a freebie so take advantage.

2. Specialisation / Market Knowledge

Look for a recruitment agency that specialises in your field and location, they will be able to provide relevant advice in your specialist career. They will know your worth and if they are able to help you find a job. There are over 40,000 recruitment agencies in the UK so finding a suitable agency can be daunting! Start with The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) website

You can search the website for agencies in your specialisation, location and if you are looking for a permanent or temporary job.

My background has mainly been IT recruitment so I understand the salaries and market conditions to be able to provide candidates with the right information for their career

3. CV

Recruiters will spend 7 seconds, yes 7 seconds looking at a CV so it needs to stand out from the crowd. A good recruiter will tell you what they like and dislike about your CV and what changes you need to make for your CV to standout. Take their advice it’s free

4. Companies

Companies work with recruitment agencies to find them talent so the agency should have a list of companies they already work with that may be suitable for your job search. If the agency does not work with a company that you are interested in working for then they will approach the company on your behalf to see if there is interest in your CV. If you are unsure on what companies are suited to you check out LinkedIn and Glassdoor as you can see what the company culture is like and read reviews.

5. Jobs

Companies use recruitment agencies for many reasons however one reason is that they are unable to advertise jobs directly or on jobs sites like LinkedIn, Reed, CV Library or Total Jobs. This could be for various reasons like they are looking at potentially replacing an under performing individual and the company want to see what is available in the marketplace. There are various reasons for companies not to advertise direct so don’t be left out of the loop and get registered with an agency.

6. Save time

Agencies liaise directly with the company they already have a relationship with so getting feedback on your CV or interview can be relatively quick compared to liaising directly with the company where you have no relationship.

7. Interview preparation

Going into an interview unaware what to expect can be daunting! Working with a recruitment agency that has a relationship with a company allows them to know what is involved in the interview process and they can prepare you as best as possible. Understanding what the hiring manager is looking for, questions to ask or if there is an assessment/test gives you an advantage over other candidates who do not have a relationship with a recruitment agency.

8. Negotiation

Finding a job can be a challenge, finding a job that pays well can be difficult. Recruitment agencies work on commission so the higher the salary they secure you the more commission they earn (normally between 15-25% of salary). If you are someone who feels uncomfortable discussing money/salary then using a recruitment agency who can do that on your behalf can take the awkwardness away from securing the job you want.

9. Speed

Looking for a job is a lengthy process and can be frustrating. Recruitment agencies get paid commission by the company for placing you. Recruiters will move quickly to progress your application to interview stage and then offer stage as they only get paid after you start the role. Speed is key for recruitment agencies.

10. Socialise / Make friends

I have met various candidates over the past 20 years and have made friendships along the way. Meeting recruiters will provide you with a network of individuals who not only look for jobs for you but will socialise with you. One of my first ever placements was Fabrizio and we are still friends to this day, I have placed him in numerous jobs and supported him in his high’s and low’s.

I hope these 10 reasons why you should build a relationship with a recruitment agency help you chose the agencies you need to work with to progress your career. Have you built a relationship with a recruitment agency that works?
